They say that the revival of a Broadway show has to be twice as good as the original because folks remember it as being twice as good as it was. I remember the magic of Christmas as a child growing up in Texas, and I suspect the reality of it was less fabulous than how I picture it now.
I think most of us have those lovely memories no matter what holiday we celebrated as children – that moment of being surrounded with all the visuals, sounds and smells to create a moment of pure joy.
In creating Hillsdale General Store, my goal was to bring a bit of that magic every day of the year to all who enter our shop. With our cast iron stove blazing in the winter and bunting proudly flying all summer, it’s a place that is unabashedly nostalgic. At this time of year we deck the store out for the holidays in a big way, partly, I suppose, to fulfill my own childhood fantasies, but when we see folks enter we know we’ve succeeded by the expressions on their faces. Both floors of our store are packed with new and vintage items, perfect for holiday gift giving.
So come on in, warm your hands by the fire, buy a candy cane and tell us your childhood memories of the season. – Matthew White
